Yes, oh yes there is an urban planning naughty list! But have no fear, we have compiled a list of ten things that could land one on said list.
1. Not protecting the public's interest
This is a given. Protecting the public's interest is planning's sacred oath, so naturally someone not following suit will find their way onto the naughty list.
2. Blaming urban planners for everything under the sun
Blaming planners for Little "P" problems is a big faux pas. Many different professions are responsible for the development of cities. Planners can make recommendations, but it takes a combination of political will and strong partnerships to achieve a community’s vision and goals.
3. Not designing for mixed-use, walkable environments
If you're not advocating for walkable neighborhoods and communities for all people, then you're going to be on the naughty list.
4. Cutting funding for affordable housing projects
Home ownership is part of the American dream and the path out of poverty. Incentives and assistance for affordable housing projects can serve to revitalize neighborhoods and stabilize declining property values. Mess with this and you're going on the naughty list.
5. Leaving neighborhood design to other professionals
Planners need to fall in love with subdivision regulations again and take them very seriously. Subdivision regulation are so vital in ensuring interconnected, walkable, and fiscally sustainable communities.
