Yes, oh yes there is an urban planning naughty list! But have no fear, we have compiled a list of ten things that could land one on said list.
1. Not protecting the public's interest
This is a given. Protecting the public's interest is planning's sacred oath, so naturally someone not following suit will find their way onto the naughty list.
2. Blaming urban planners for engineering blunders
Blaming planners for Little "P" problems is a big faux pas. No the planners aren't responsible for your subdivision's poor drainage design and no they aren't responsible for filling pot holes. Planners didn't disconnect neighborhoods with highway projects (well, except for Robert Moses).
3. Not designing for mixed-use, walkable environments
If you're not advocating for walkable, mixed use and mixed income environments, then you're going to be on the naughty list.
4. Cutting funding for affordable housing projects
Home ownership is part of the American dream and the path out of poverty. Incentives and assistance for affordable housing projects can serve to revitalize neighborhoods and stabilize declining property values. Mess with this and you're going on the naughty list.
5. Preempting local control over landuse and rights-of-way
Why would the feds and state lawmakers care about local decisions other than to reduce barriers for corporate sponsors? Oh...right.
