Urban Designer - Frederick, MD
Salary: $63,772.00 - $70,149.00 Annually
Job Summary
This is a professional position with the City of Frederick, Maryland, that will create and implement the goals and policies of the comprehensive plan, small area plans, design guidelines projects, special studies and other long range planning projects. Other tasks for this position will include the review and analysis of regulatory plans ensuring site designs that integrate buildings, public spaces and circulation systems for the implementation of comprehensive, small area and master plans.
The ideal candidates will have outstanding analytical capabilities, design skills and a proven record of providing leadership and negotiating successfully for the highest quality for the City of Frederick. The candidate should have a strong understanding of zoning, planning areas, community activity and development potential in the City of Frederick. This position requires extensive experience in project leadership and development coordination. The ideal candidate must also demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work directly with residents, developers, planners, architects, engineers, attorneys and public officials. Fieldwork and occasional evening meetings are required.
The Urban Designer position will receive direct supervision from the Division Manager of Community Planning and Urban Design. Regular hours for this position are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5 p.m. with occasional work required after hours to attend public meetings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Work in coordination with the Division Manager of Community Planning and Urban Design on long range planning projects including the Comprehensive Plan, annexations, rezonings, community place making and design and policy issues;
- Basic understanding of place making and community design (building, street, and public space types plus associated principles);
- Ability to communicate verbally, in writing, and through drawings;
- Ability to conduct an effective community outreach program;
- Demonstrates innovative thinking in planning for sustainable communities on a site, neighborhood, Community, and regional scale;
- Demonstrates knowledge of the principles, practices, and trends in architecture and urban design;
- Can conduct studies, analyze findings and provide recommendations for a wide range of urban design;
- Issues with an emphasis on architecture and building design;
- Can interpret federal, state, and local regulations and ordinances;
- Possesses strong written, oral and graphic communications skills and is able to communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders in a clear, compelling manner;
- Demonstrated creative ability, including urban, architectural, and graphic design;
- Drives a City vehicle to meetings and between worksites;
- Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- A Master's degree from an accredited college or university in urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture or a related field.
- A minimum of three years of work experience.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of planning, zoning regulations, public participation and urban design.
- Vehicle Operator's license with driving record in accordance with City policies is required.
- Ability and willingness to work evenings for scheduled meetings and special meetings as needed.
- Self-motivated, capable of taking initiative.
- Ability to research issues, analyzes data, write and communicate clearly, and present oral reports effectively at public meetings.
- MS Word and other MS Office tools, required.
- ArcMap, Illustrator, Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, In Design, SketchUp, Revit, or Rhino desired.
