Description
The City of Tacoma, Public Works Engineering Division is recruiting for the appointive/at-will position of Associate Engineer within the fast-paced and multi-faceted work environment of the Traffic Engineering Section.
We are seeking a collaborative team member who will be responsible for the enhancement and improvement of the City's transportation system through the following individual and team efforts:

Qualifications: Four-year degree from an ABET accredited college or university in engineering, planning or related field.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Engineer in Training Certificate for advancement to pay step four or higher.
Some positions may require a valid Washington Driver's License at the time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.
Knowledge & SkillsANALYTICAL:
Apply methods of design review and verification with respect to traffic operations, traffic safety, traffic signal design, and streetlighting design. Determine best methods for categorizing and documentation of roadway infrastructure elements, such as traffic signal equipment, streetlighting, and other municipal assets. Provide consistent review of designs relative to applicable industry and municipal standards as well as municipal code requirements.
COMMUNICATIONS:
Ability to communicate clearly and prepare effective oral and written communications for professional and general public purposes and audiences. Ability to adopt different communication styles for different audiences, such as residents, business owners, contractors, developers, and co-workers.
LEADERSHIP:
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with co-workers, the general public, city, county, state and federal agencies while researching and supporting best practices to implement within assigned department programs.
MANAGEMENT:
Plan and organize work to meet schedules and timelines. Demonstrable ability to manage and successfully complete concurrent multiple high priority tasks and assignments.
PROFESSIONALISM:
Remain current on applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures within the engineering field applicable to work. Work efficiently in a collaborative environment where the necessary information to complete the work may require obtaining information and/or assistance from different people or sources.
TECHNICAL:
Ability to apply professional knowledge and engineering principles to the design and review of traffic engineering elements, such as traffic controls and streetlights. Operate a personal computer and be self-reliant with industry-applicable programs and operating system software to include peripheral office support equipment in order to accomplish assigned tasks. Database, CAD, and GIS experience desirable, but not required.

We are seeking a collaborative team member who will be responsible for the enhancement and improvement of the City's transportation system through the following individual and team efforts:
- design of improvements for planned capital improvement projects;
- assisting with design and review of lighting roadways for safety benefits;
- contribute to the meticulous design of traffic signals and beacons;
- spearheading an important effort to categorize and document as-built records for traffic signal and streetlight assets;
- first-hand review of roadway conditions for safety improvements;
- collection and examination of traffic data to help make informed decisions about roadway controls;
- review and design of traffic signing and striping;
- create design plans and construction specifications; and
- working with citizens concerning neighborhood traffic calming options and evaluations
- Lead the completion of as-built records for signal and streetlight assets; coordinate, design and maintain inventories to support asset management systems including: streetlights, traffic signals, traffic warning beacons, school speed zones, roadway markings, signs and similar devices.
- Provide development review for signal, streetlight and related assets.
- Customer service support and other traffic engineering functions, such as: traffic control permits, construction plan review, traffic engineering design, street use permits, and customer inquiries and complaints.
- Provide calculations, design and plan review for signal and streetlight engineering, channelization, driveways/roadway access, and similar traffic engineering functions.
